FIVE WAYS TO DE-STRESS

Life can be stressful, we all know that. Money worries, the pressure of holding down a job, family life, anxiety over the future... Yeah, us human beings have a lot to mull over, and I think we all need a bit of de-stressing so we're not distressing at the thought of a downward spiral. Here are five ways that I personally use to help me relax when life gets a little too much.

ASMR
I know this one gets made fun of a lot on the internet, but it's so helpful to me, especially if I find that I can't sleep. If you aren't aware of what ASMR is, it stands for autonomous sensory meridian response, which is basically a tingly feeling that usually starts on your scalp and moves down the back of your neck or upper spine, prompting relaxation. Certain sounds and actions give the body tingles, and everyone is different. There's a whole community of people who perform role plays on YouTube. I don't enjoy the painfully obvious tap-on-every-bottle approach, but I do like the subtle sounds that chilled out role plays provide. My first experience with ASMR was when I was watching Love Actually, weirdly enough, and I got tingles when Rowan Atkinson was wrapping THAT gift for Alan Rickman. So gift wrapping is also a personal favourite of mine to watch! Not everyone can feel ASMR, but I urge you to look past the stigma of it being odd and give it a go one night. Make sure you have your earphones at the ready, because most ASMRtists (yes, real legitimate term) use special sensitive microphones that cater to each ear individually. Honestly, tingles galore and it makes you so sleepy it's unreal.

DECLUTTER
Physically, mentally, whatever. If there are things on your mind and you don't want to actually talk about them, write them down. I do this a lot and it's saved me from a lot of unwanted petty arguments. I recently decluttered my bedroom and I'm so thankful for it. Tidy house, tidy mind as they say. If it's too overwhelming, start small. Rearrange your vanity table, desk, or even a shelf. It's all about making your life less stressed, not more. Next time I'm feeling stressed I'm definitely going to tackle the humungous task of decluttering my wardrobe. So much stuff will be going to homeless shelters and charity shops, believe me!

EXERCISE
I don't do this as much as I should at the moment, but exercise is scientifically proven to de-stress. A light jog around the block, a yoga session, perhaps even meditation... I've tried them all and all have worked in the past. We bought a spinning bike at the beginning of the year and I find that 20 minutes on that gets all my stress and aggression out after a long day. Exercise gives you endorphins and endorphins make you happy (resisting the urge to quote Legally Blonde here!) so anything you enjoy will stand you in good stead for a bit of mindfulness.

SOAK
Is there anything better, or more relaxing, than running a nice hot bath after a terribly trying day? I think not. I have a whole bunch of "emergency" Lush bath bombs and bubbles bars should I ever have a bad day - The Comforter does its namesake proud here. Pick your favourites, light a gorgeous-smelling candle, turn on some easy listening music or your current Netflix obsession, and just be. But get out before your fingers go all pruney, because ew.

READ
It sounds simple but sometimes if I'm having a particularly stressful day all I want to do is sit down with lovely big mug of hot tea and a good book. I've also been trying to switch off from my laptop, phone, social media etc. and read in bed before I go to sleep. It's great for winding down. A bonus here is those adult colouring books you can get to help with mindfulness. I really love those. Oh, and if anyone has any good book recommendations too I'd love to hear some!

  1. Okay so I have never even hard of ASMR but I cam frantically googling and about to let rip on a YouTube video to see if I can get on this bandwagon, because it sounds amazing!

I'm already a huge fan of exercising to destress too, nothing makes me feel better than getting back from a run (no matter how much I hated the run itself ha ha!)
