WHAT I'VE BEEN WATCHING

I'm a self-confessed binge watcher. There's nothing I love more than coming home from work, sticking on my favourite box set and slumping down on the sofa to watch hour after hour like a lazy upturned tortoise. And the rise of streaming sites like jolly old Netflix have made this even more possible, only now it's happening from my bed and I don't even have to get up to change the disc. Is it becoming a problem? Most probably...

Now I'm a bit of a cheeky one, and might've decided that the UK Netflix selection doesn't really warrant my £6.99-a-month subscription, and so I have turned to the dark side. Slight tweaking of my browser and a nice little downloaded extension later, I am happily able to access Netflix shows from any country I want. I'm obviously not advocating that, because it's pretty naughty, but this wouldn't happen if Netflix was the same in every country, you feel?

So here's what I've been binge-watching recently:

AMERICAN HORROR STORY
(UK and US Netflix)
I had never seen an episode of this before last month, but over the next three weekends I had finished all four seasons and then wondered what I was going to do with my life. Now, I must admit, I think the seasons get progressively less exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two seasons - as gruesomely messed up as they are - but I didn't get on with Covent or Freak Show as much and found myself getting distracted by other things while they were on. Also might be crushing a little bit on Evan Peters after watching them all... And I was warned that this would happen, thanks Tumblr gifsets...

MAKING A MURDERER
(UK and US Netflix)
Netflix's newest phenomenon, Making a Murderer, is a 10-part docu-series that follows the true events of Steven Avery's wrongful conviction and release after 18 years behind bars. After his release he decides to sue the Wisconsin police system for wrongful imprisonment and is then arrested again, this time for the questionable murder of a young woman - a crime which he completely denies having anything to do with. It's really compelling stuff, with tons of real-time courtroom footage and police interviews. I actually had to stop watching after episode three because I was so, so frustrated at the blatant police corruption that I couldn't get my head around it. A couple of binge sessions later and I have two more 1-hour episodes to go, but I'm preparing myself for the notion that this guy isn't getting out of prison again. I'm sure there's much more to this story than is let on in this docu-series but this particular show brings to light some really crazy coincidences otherwise.

BOB'S BURGERS
(US Netflix)
Ah yes, a hilarious cartoon for adults and children alike. Bob's Burgers is one of my absolute favourite shows to watch if I need cheering up. The show itself is so unique in that it carries zero prejudices and makes no qualms about the fact that every family is just a little bit weird and we need to embrace that hilarity to get on in life. Each character in the family is completely loveable; from self-confessed wine loving Mum Linda (voiced by a bloke, no less) to fart-loving feminist little brother Gene, you're guaranteed to associated with each and every one of them in one way or another. Episodes I recommend watching that are available on Netflix are: Bed and Breakfast, Ear-sy Rider, Lindapendent Woman, Two for Tina, Boyz 4 Now, Fort Night, Turkey in a Can, Slumber Party, and Mazel-Tina. I hope they decide to put seasons 5 and 6 on Netflix in the future as well - so so good!

PARKS AND RECREATION
(US Netflix)
I think Parks and Recreation has to be my ultimate favourite sitcom ever made. I started watching this before Netflix even came on the scene and I just loved everything about it. For those of you who don't know, the show is about the Parks and Recreation department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana and stars the amazing Amy Poehler as passionate mid-level bureaucrat Leslie Knope. I would be here all day singing its praises because it's wonderfully heart-warming and just plain side-splittingly funny at times. Again, every character offers something to the show, even Jerry/Larry/Terry/Barry/Garry Gergich! It has introduced me to some brilliant comedic actors like Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Nick Offerman and Billy Eichner; and made me fall in love with a pudgy Chris Pratt. It's hard to choose my favourite character but I love April and Andy together, and Leslie and Ann's friendship is just so enviable and full of adoration - "oh Ann, you beautiful sophisticated newborn baby..."

THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT
(UK and US Netflix)
Oh my god, this show is just so ridiculous I love it! Created by my spirit animal Tina Fey, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is another Netflix original that took the online community by storm. It stars Ellie Kemper as Kimmy, a young woman who was rescued from a doomsday cult in Indiana after 15 years in an underground bunker. Sounds crazy, and it absolutely is! The show follows Kimmy as she adjusts to a new life in New York City, where she befriends struggling actor Titus Andromedon, and gains a job working as a nanny for out-of-touch socialite Jacqueline Voorhees, all while trying to take down the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne for holding her in that bunker. It also has the catchiest viral theme song in the history of any show ever, and that's not even an exaggeration! I honestly can't wait for season 2, definitely watched the entire first season in one day. Females are strong as hell!

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
(UK and US Netflix)
The Netflix original that started it all, Orange is the New Black (OITNB) is a rollercoaster from start to finish. I'm sure I don't need to give you a synopsis of this crazy-popular hit online show, but I can safely say that if you've watched from season 1 your opinion of certain characters will have completely changed. I love the whole female empowerment movement that goes on despite being stuck in a prison. I think getting to know every character's back story really helps you to understand why and how they got to prison, and gives the entire predicament a real human aspect. It's dramatic, hard-hitting, hilariously funny at times... And when certain horrible characters get their comeuppance damn does it feel good to watch!

  1. Ahhhh I watch so many of these series! I think my favorite of all time has to be Parks and Recreation - Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman are the best people in the world haha. I feel you on the frustration with Making A Murderer; it's crazy that that kind of corruption still exists. Great post! xx

  2. I've heard great things about Making A Murderer and I don't know why I haven't watched it yet. I agree about AHS though, I got bored half way through the new season Hotel and I've not caught up yet. I started watching Parks and Rec too when I had a laptop and could be naughty and I'm gutted it's not on UK Netflix, it's so fun!

    1. Yeah, I haven't bothered to look for "Hotel" online because I was bit disappointed with Freak Show mostly! Absolutely love Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson though - such fabulous actresses. I heard they've commissioned a sixth season as well, not sure if I'll rush to watch - will see what other people think first. I really hope Parks and Rec turns up on the UK Netflix eventually, we're totally missing out on the brilliance! Xx

  3. I finally got a TV/Roku box in my bedroom for Christmas so I've been spending even more time watching Netflix recently!
Parks & Rec really is the best! I think I'd go as far to say, it's my favourite TV show ever! And Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and OITNB are both brilliant and must-watch Netflix shows! :)
I'm currently halfway through Making A Murderer and it really is unbelievable! I don't think I've ever watched a documentary or show before where I've felt like shouting at the screen this much before! Hehe.

    1. It's just such easy watching, isn't it? Despite the fact that it's a primarily political sitcom, it still manages to be hilarious and endearing. Ah yes, definitely must-watches, I think! Xx

  4. I'm thinking I need to tweak my Netflix a little to get the best of both worlds. I adore the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It's hilarious and I can't wait for the next season. I'm addicted to Dare Devil and Jessica Jones right now!

    1. Yeah it sucks that there's so much content on the US Netflix compared to the UK one. We're paying customers, we should get everything that's available in every country! Ahh I have yet to watch either of those but they're definitely on my list! Xx

    1. It's become quite a cult phenomenon now it seems. I think it's quite a unique set up as far as a the whole series of one-hour documentaries thing, but that case is just insane! I've read a few things since finishing the show and now I'm not sure what to believe - bit awkward! Ah, I love HIMYM too, always watch it on E4 when I'm at home! Xx

  14. I do the same as you, US netflix is so much better than the UK! I really want to watch Parks and Recreations, I'll have to add it to my list. Atm, I'm watching Jessica Jones, and I've just finished watching Gotham and they are both so good!

    1. It's the constant struggle of finding something you like, binge-watching, getting sad it's over, and then starting up another series! There's always something new to watch, which I both love and loathe at the same time - nothing else ever gets done, haha! Xx

  16. I'm one of those people who has completely avoided Netflix during its popular hype. I'm not one to sit and watch these american dramas (I'd much rather enjoy my soaps like an old woman) but saying that, I think I do need to stretch further and get in to these shows; especially Making A Murderer as it's all I'm hearing about haha. I'm sure once I start, I'll be hooked! x
